US President Donald Trump told the Axios portal that he is considering sending a second aircraft carrier strike group to the Middle East as a preparatory measure for military action in the event that negotiations with Iran fail.
The United States and Iran resumed talks last Friday in Oman, for the first time since the 12-day war in June. In parallel with this diplomatic process, the Trump administration has undertaken a significant military buildup in the Gulf region.
" Either we're going to make a deal, or we're going to have to do something very tough, like last time ," Trump told Axios.
The US president said he expects a second round of US-Iran talks to take place next week. He also confirmed that a military fleet is already moving towards the region and that sending another strike group is being considered.
" We have an army going there and another one may go ," Trump said, adding that he was "thinking" about sending an additional aircraft carrier.
A US official confirmed that discussions are underway to deploy a second strike group to the area. This would add to the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier and its accompanying fleet, which includes fighter jets, Tomahawk missiles and several warships. During much of the Gaza war, the US had two aircraft carriers deployed to the region.
Trump expressed optimism about the diplomatic path, stating that Iran "very much wants to make a deal" and that this time it is participating in talks more seriously than in previous rounds, due to military pressure.
“Last time they didn’t believe I would do it,” Trump said, referring to his decision to strike Iran’s nuclear facilities in June. “They overestimated their capabilities.” He said the talks this time are “very different.”
