United States President Donald Trump, during his speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, publicly made a statement that has raised diplomatic alarm in European capitals: Greenland is territory of the Western Hemisphere and only the US can defend it.
“ Every NATO ally has an obligation to defend its territory ,” President Trump said, but added firmly: “ The fact is that no country or group of countries is in a position to guarantee the security of Greenland, except the United States. We are a great power – much greater than people realize .”
The US president described Greenland as a " vast, almost uninhabited and undeveloped territory, located vulnerable at a key point between the US, Russia and China ", a clear geostrategic reference to the Arctic as an area of international competition for resources and influence.
“ There are so many rare minerals there ,” he added. “ But that’s not why we need it. We need it for our national security and for international security. This large, unsecured island is part of North America – it’s our northern border in the Western Hemisphere. It’s our territory .”
