US President Donald Trump's announcement to send a hospital ship to Greenland has sparked immediate reactions from the island's political leaders and from Denmark.
Trump announced on his social network Truth Social that the US administration will take concrete steps to provide health assistance to Greenland. He emphasized that the initiative is being carried out in cooperation with Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry.
"Working with the fantastic Governor of Louisiana, Jeff Landry, we will be sending a large hospital ship to Greenland to take care of the many people who are sick and not getting the proper care there. It's on the way!!!" Trump said.
His statement was interpreted as criticism of Greenland's healthcare system. Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen reacted publicly by opposing this stance and emphasizing the public nature of the country's healthcare service.
"President Trump's idea of sending a US hospital ship here to Greenland has been noticed. But we have a public health system, where treatment is free for citizens," Nielsen said.
"This is a deliberate choice and a fundamental part of our society. It doesn't work like that in the US, where you have to pay to see a doctor."
The Prime Minister of Denmark, Mette Frederiksen, also reacted through a post on Facebook, supporting the position of the Greenlandic authorities.
"I'm glad to live in a country where everyone has free and equal access to health. Where insurance and wealth don't determine whether you get proper treatment."
Trump's announcement comes amid tensions between the United States and the Kingdom of Denmark over the US president's claims to Greenland. A few days ago, authorities in Nuuk provided medical treatment to a crew member of a US submarine. Trump's tweet was published hours after the incident, while Greenland authorities have not requested assistance from the United States.
