Former president Donald Trump has chosen the senator from Ohio, James David Vance (JD Vance), as a candidate for vice president.
Although 39-year-old Vance - born James David Bowman - has been among Trump's harshest critics in the past, he has changed his stance, becoming one of Trump's most vocal defenders.
Through a post on his social network "Truth Social", Trump writes that he will do everything to make America great again.
" After much deliberation and thought, and considering the extraordinary talents of many others, I have decided that the person best suited to assume the office of Vice President of the United States is Senator JD Vance of the Great State of Ohio ," Trump announced.
JD Vance comes from a middle class of society. He is known for his book 'Hillbilly Elegy', which defends the working class.
" JD served our country honorably in the Marine Corps, graduated from Ohio State University, Summa Cum Laude, and is a graduate of Yale Law School, where he was editor of The Yale Law Journal and President of the Association of Yale Law Veterans. JD's book, 'Hillbilly Elegy,' became a movie, after championing the working men and women of our country. JD has had a very successful business career in Technology and Finance, and now, during the Campaign, will to focus strongly on the people he fought so brilliantly for, American Workers and Farmers in Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio, Minnesota and far beyond… ” Trump said.
The state of Ohio is considered a Republican base. Vance, a staunch conservative, is not expected to bring more votes to Trump's district, and may even increase dilemmas among some moderate voters. It should be noted that he has been a great critic of Trump, before he was elected senator two years ago.
Some Trump supporters have called for him to pick a woman or a person of color for the state's second-most important position to increase his chances of victory.
Who is JDVance?
James David Vance (born James Donald Bowman, August 2, 1984) is an American politician serving as the junior United States Senator from Ohio from 2022. As a member of the Republican Party, he became known for his memoirs of 2016, "Hillbilly Elegy".
Born in Middletown, Ohio, Vance served in the Marine Corps before studying political science and philosophy at Ohio State University and earning a Juris Doctor from Yale Law School. His memoir, which chronicles his Middletown upbringing, became a New York Times bestseller and garnered press attention during the 2016 United States presidential election. Vance launched his first political campaign for the Ohio Senate in 2021 and won the Republican nomination after being endorsed by former President Donald Trump.
He defeated Democratic candidate Tim Ryan in the general election. Trump announced Vance as his running mate during the 2024 Republican National Convention.
