Protests in Iran

Verified footage emerging from Iran shows bodies piled up in a hospital, snipers positioned on buildings and CCTV cameras being destroyed, following an unprecedented crackdown on protests earlier this month.

BBC Verify has been following the spread of protests across Iran since they first erupted in late December, but the authorities' near-total internet shutdown has made it extremely difficult to document the scale of state killings and rapes of protesters.

The US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) says it has confirmed the killing of nearly 6,000 people, including 5,633 protesters, since the unrest began in late December. It says it is also investigating another 17,000 reported deaths, despite an internet shutdown after nearly three weeks.

Another group, the Norway-based Organization for Human Rights in Iran (IHR), has warned that the final death toll could exceed 25,000.

Iranian authorities said last week that more than 3,100 people were killed, but most were security personnel or bystanders attacked by "protesters."

The latest videos to emerge from the country are understood to have been filmed on January 8 and 9, when thousands of people took to the streets following a call for nationwide protests by Reza Pahlavi, the exiled son of the late Shah.

These are believed to be the deadliest nights for protesters, and newly verified footage shows how Iran's security forces have been violently suppressing protesters.

Multiple clips analyzed by BBC Verify and BBC Persian show bodies piled up inside a morgue at Tehranpars Hospital in eastern Tehran.

We verified the location of the hospital by comparing its interior with other publicly available images and videos of the building, and counted at least 31 bodies in just one video. Another clip shows seven body bags lying on the ground outside the hospital entrance.

Hundreds of people are seen protesting on a highway west of Tehran in another video before multiple gunshots are heard and people start screaming.

Protesters have been seen trying to circumvent Iran's heavy surveillance infrastructure by disabling CCTV cameras. Footage we have verified shows a person in the capital climbing a pole and repeatedly hitting a surveillance camera in an attempt to disable it. A large crowd of protesters can be seen on the ground and heard cheering as the camera is damaged.

We have been tracking the spread of anti-government protests in 71 cities and towns in Iran, although the true number of areas where demonstrations have taken place is likely much higher.

In the southeastern city of Kerman, a video filmed from a building shows several armed men in military uniforms walking down a street, repeatedly firing their guns, although it is not clear who they are shooting at.

Snipers have also been filmed on rooftops. In the northeastern city of Mashhad, a verified video shows two men dressed in black on the roof of a building during the day. One man stands next to a large rifle leaning against the wall and talks on the phone. The other man sits on the floor, smoking a cigarette.

For most people there has been a near-complete internet outage since January 8, but some have managed to briefly access the internet using methods such as SpaceX's Starlink satellite internet and virtual private networks (VPNs).

More videos are likely to emerge in the coming days, as the country's economy has struggled during the power outage. /Adapted from BBC/
