Sentenced to 1 year in prison, Milorad Dodik pays off: He will pay 18 thousand

The Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina approved the replacement of Milorad Dodik's one-year prison sentence with a fine, in accordance with the law that determines it.

The court said today that "in accordance with legal regulations, a decision was made which, following the statement of the Prosecutor's Office of Bosnia and Herzegovina, approved the aforementioned defense proposal and replaced Milorad Dodik's prison sentence with a fine."

The Criminal Code of Bosnia and Herzegovina provides for the possibility of replacing a prison sentence of up to one year with a fine. While a day in prison costs 100 KM (50 euros), Dodik will pay around 36,500 KM (a little over 18,000 euros) within a year.

Dodik was legally sentenced to 1 year in prison and 6 years of ban on holding any public office for disobeying the decisions of the high representative of the international community in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

After the decision became final, on August 6, the Central Election Commission of Bosnia and Herzegovina annulled the mandate of the President of Republika Srpska, Milorad Dodik, elected in the 2022 general elections.

Milorad Dodik's legal team appealed the Election Commission's decision on August 12, and the Appellate Division of the Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina will make a final decision on it within three days from the day the appeal was filed.

The procedure established after the end of the mandate due to the decision of the Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the CEC implies the announcement of early elections for the President of the RS, which may be blocked or obstructed by the RS entities.

Immediately after the CEC decision, Dodik announced the possibility of a referendum in RS, in which citizens would decide on the mandate of the entity's president, that is, on the rejection of the state court's decision.

The legal team also filed a request with the Constitutional Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina, which Dodik does not recognize, for a temporary measure that stops the execution of the decision until the final decision of the Constitutional Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Dodik’s lawyer, Goran Bubić, said that this was done in order to create a path for an appeal to the European Court of Human Rights, which is only possible after the Constitutional Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina rules on the case.

Dodik was found guilty of signing the decree promulgating the law, which the High Representative in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Christian Šmit, had previously annulled.

With those laws, the legislative bodies in RS attempted to prevent the implementation of decisions of the Constitutional Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the High Representative on the territory of that entity in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
