Netanyahu, with broad domestic and international consensus, is trying to achieve, at the cost of extermination, the messianic goal of a "Greater Israel."
Yesterday in Gaza, an Israeli airstrike targeted an Al Jazeera tent, killing six journalists inside. According to the IDF, Anas al-Sharif was a member of Hamas.
With what moral and political credibility do European governments have to demand a "just peace" for Ukraine when they continue to refuse to sever all military, economic and political ties with Israel? A few hours ago, the only "democracy" in the Middle East, in order to continue with even greater impunity with its total occupation of Gaza, as well as the West Bank, and to complete the elimination of the Palestinian people, murdered one of the few Palestinian journalists still heroically present there: Anas Al-Sharif.
Anas was 28 years old and worked for Al Jazeera, the Qatar-based television news network. Three other journalists and the technician who was with him were killed along with him. Their deaths bring the gruesome number of journalists killed by the Israeli military to nearly 200.
Anassi was aware of the dangers hidden in the mission of reporting the facts before his eyes and helping to save his people, his homeland: Palestine. A few days earlier, the Committee to Protect Journalists, a non-profit organization founded in New York 44 years ago to protect press freedom and journalists, had warned him of the "great danger" he faced. His last and unforgivable "insult" was to cry during a live broadcast in front of hungry children. The young correspondent had prepared a moral and professional "testament".
"If these words reach you, know that Israel has succeeded in killing me and silencing my voice... Never for a day have I hesitated to tell the truth as it is, without falsifications or distortions, hoping that God would be a witness to those who remained silent, those who accepted our murder, those who suffocated us, whose hearts remained insensitive to the remains of our children and women, and who failed to stop the massacre that our people endured for more than a year and a half," it said in an excerpt.
Of course, according to the Tel Aviv government's account, Anas was on Hamas' payroll. Here, the excuse for the mistake, used in 2022 in Jenin, after the murder of Palestinian-American journalist Shireen Abu Akleh and many, many other times, could not work.
The other four victims need no explanation. They were with him. No evidence was given for the charges and death sentence of Anas. No court intervened before the execution.
The unilateral right of force prevails. It is an absolute right, unbound by any norms of human coexistence, not to mention international treaties. So shameless is it that yesterday Prime Minister Netanyahu labeled the news of daily deaths from starvation as "fake news." They are supposed to be fabrications, but since October 7, 2023, he has blocked foreign journalists from entering Gaza.
Eliminating inappropriate sources of truth is the first rule. The BBC, Reuters, the Associated Press and Agence France Presse issued a joint statement last week saying they were "extremely concerned about their journalists in Gaza, who are increasingly unable to feed themselves and their families."
European governments are content with the talks. Now, they are converting to the empty recognition of the State of Palestine.
