Iran's Assembly of Experts is expected to nominate the son of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei as the next supreme leader. According to reports, some members of the religious body have pointed to Mojtaba Khamenei, the second son of the assassinated Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, as a possible successor.
Following reports of divisions within the Assembly of Experts, the clerical institution has signaled that it is ready to announce a new supreme leader as early as Sunday.
Assembly of Experts member Ayatollah Mohammad Mahdi Mirbagheri stated on Sunday that, although "some obstacles" remain, there is almost a consensus.
This was reported by the semi-official Iranian agency Mehr News Agency.
Another member of the Assembly, Ayatollah Mohsen Heidari Alekasir, has gone on record stating that the candidate has already been selected.
According to him, the decision is based on the advice of the late supreme leader that Iran's top leader should be "hated by the enemy" and not appreciated by him.
