A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 5.3 on the Richter scale was recorded this morning in Leptokarya in Thesprotia, on the border with Albania, Greek media reported. According to them, as a result of the strong tremors, residents of many areas of Epirus and beyond have taken to the streets, leaving their homes, while panic has gripped the entire area.
The earthquake was particularly felt in the city of Ioannina. Images recorded by EpirusPost from the center of Ioannina, where residents are inside their cars, are characteristic.
Meanwhile, the video below has captured the moment of the tremors on security cameras in a business premises in Ioannina. As can be seen in the video, the clock shows 5:32 in the morning when the strong impact occurred.
Speaking to ERT, the president of the Organization for Earthquake Planning and Protection (OASP) and professor of Geology, Efthymios Lekkas, stressed that the earthquake was felt across a large part of the country, with testimonies from citizens from Western Greece to Larissa. According to Lekkas, this was due to three main reasons.
As he explained, the magnitude of the earthquake is "calculable", while the shallow focal depth contributed to the intense sensation of the tremor. At the same time, he noted that the timing of the event played a role in the perception of the phenomenon by citizens.

"The strong sensation over a large area is also due to the fact that it occurred during a time of general calm, so people perceive an earthquake more easily than when there is intense activity," he said.
