The US administration regrets the decision

The White House has reacted to the Vatican's decision not to join and participate in the "Peace Board" along with other countries. The US administration described the decision as disappointing.

White House Press Secretary Caroline Leavitt told reporters that the administration believes that peace should not be a partisan, political or adversarial issue.

She added that the administration wants all invitees to become part of the board, emphasizing that this body will oversee the reconstruction of a territory hit by violence, bloodshed, and poverty for a long period.

The board will be chaired indefinitely by former President Donald Trump. It was originally created to oversee the reconstruction of Gaza, but its mandate was later expanded to become a global peacekeeping body. Pope Leo XIV was invited to join the board last month.

Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Holy See's secretary of state, told the media that the Vatican would not accept the invitation. He said that some elements of the plan remain unclear and that fundamental issues require clarification.

The Vatican has also expressed concern that the "Peace Board" could overlap with the role and powers of the United Nations in the field of peacekeeping.
