Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny has died aged 47 in prison, ending a years-long fight against corruption and the Kremlin.
According to foreign media, the prison service in the Yamalo-Nenets district, where Navalny was serving his sentence, announced that he "felt bad" and "lost consciousness" after a walk on Friday. An emergency medical team was immediately called and tried to revive him, but without success.
"On February 16, 2024, in the penal colony no. 3, convict AA Navalny did not feel well after a walk, almost immediately lost consciousness.
The medical workers of the facility immediately arrived at the scene and the emergency medical team was called. All the necessary resuscitation measures were carried out, but they did not give positive results and the emergency doctors confirmed the death of the convict. But the causes of death are being determined," Interfax news agency reported.
Navalny's lawyer, Leonid Solovyov, told Russian media that he would not comment on the case yet.
Navalny's death leaves the Russian opposition, beleaguered by years of harassment and prosecution, without a clear figurehead. All of Putin's high-profile critics are now either dead, imprisoned or in exile.
