The leader of the Russian opposition, Alexei Navalny, died this Friday, February 16, in the prison premises, where he had been transferred to Siberia.
The President of the European Council, Charles Michel, also reacted to the news, blaming the death of President Vladimir Putin's regime. Through a post on Facebook, Michel expresses his condolences to the family and underlines that fighters die, but the fight for freedom never ends.
"Alexei Navalny fought for the values of freedom and democracy. For his ideals, he made the ultimate sacrifice. The EU considers the Russian regime solely responsible for this tragic death. My deepest condolences to his family. And to those who fight for democracy around the world in the darkest conditions. Warriors die. But the fight for freedom never ends", Michel wrote in "X".
Navalny was sentenced to 19 years in prison on charges of extremism.
Navalny was an anti-corruption activist who became a leading figure in the opposition to Vladimir Putin in Russia, organizing anti-Kremlin protests.
The fierce critic of Putin first rose to prominence as a blogger in 2010, publishing investigations into corruption in Russia, with his videos garnering millions of views online.
