Without a doubt, the summer of 2024 will go down in American history as one of those periods full of unexpected political events.
The Associated Press, in a long analysis, weighs all the recent developments in the United States of America that have attracted the attention of all international media.
So what exactly happened?
It all started on June 27, where US President Joe Biden and former White House chief Donald Trump met in Atlanta to hold their first presidential debate.
The face-to-face confrontation highlighted the weaknesses of the democratic candidate. Biden's performance, riddled with setbacks and awkward pauses, alarmed Democrats, raising doubts about whether he could defeat Trump in November.
For weeks, Biden and his team claimed it was just a "bad" night, insisting the president would continue his campaign as normal.
"I don't walk as easily as I used to. I don't speak as well as I used to. I don't argue like I used to. But I know what I know. I know how to tell the truth," said Joe Biden.
But as an internal debate in the Democratic party began, with 13, a person in Butler, Pennsylvania opened fire on Trump, as the latter was holding an election rally.
Former President Trump was wounded in the ear, while one of his supporters was killed. The assassination attempt stunned the nation and brought threats of political violence back into focus.
Two days after the assassination, the Republican National Convention began. While accepting the presidential nomination, Trump dwelled on his "second chance" to live after the shooting.
“It can only be a bullet I thought. I moved my hand and it was covered in blood, blood all over the place," Trump said.
On July 21, under increasing pressure from Democrats, Biden announced that he would withdraw from the presidential race.
"I have given my heart and soul to our nation. Like many others. I have been blessed, a million times over," said the US president.
Biden supported Vice President Kamala Harris to face Trump, once again igniting "hope" for victory in the Democratic party.
"So the momentum of this race is changing. And there are signs that Donald Trump is feeling it.”
Harris later addressed the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, where she accepted the party's nomination for president.
