The State Department will lay off more than 1,300 people this Friday, as part of a dramatic reorganization of the agency.
The layoffs will affect 1,107 civil service officials and 246 foreign service officials, the announcement said. It comes as the State Department is implementing a sweeping reorganization as part of the Trump administration's broader efforts to shrink the federal government. Hundreds of offices and bureaus are being eliminated or reorganized as a result of the changes.
“Approximately 3,000 members of the workforce will be eliminated as part of the reorganization. In connection with the reorganization of the Department first announced by the Secretary of State on April 22, 2025, the Department is streamlining internal operations to focus on diplomatic priorities.
"The headcount reductions have been carefully tailored to affect non-core functions, duplicate or redundant offices, as well as offices where significant efficiencies can be found from centralizing or consolidating functions and responsibilities ," the announcement said.
That number includes people being laid off as well as those leaving voluntarily. Foreign service officers who receive “Reduction in Force” (RIF) notices on Friday will be placed on administrative leave for 120 days before they officially lose their jobs, according to the announcement. Most civil servants will be placed on leave for 60 days before their dismissals take effect, the announcement said.
