The "ping-pong" for peace in Gaza continues / Israel accepts the US

Netanyahu has communicated to the families of hostages held in Gaza that he has agreed to the plan, marking an important step towards the possibility of ending the ongoing conflict.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has accepted a new proposal for a ceasefire in Gaza presented by US envoy Steve Witkoff, according to Israeli media reports.

Netanyahu has communicated to the families of hostages held in Gaza that he has agreed to the plan, marking an important step towards the possibility of ending the ongoing conflict.

However, Hamas, which earlier confirmed it had received the proposal and was considering it, is likely to reject it, according to reports from Israeli media outlet Walla.

A Hamas source reportedly expressed “disappointment” with the content of the proposal, describing it as more biased in favor of Israel than previous ceasefire plans. This view was supported by a senior Israeli official, who said that there was a belief in Israel that Hamas would reject the proposal.

This development comes at a time when ceasefire negotiations between Israel and Hamas have been complicated, with ongoing tensions and disagreements over the terms of a potential agreement.

A week ago, the situation was completely opposite, with Hamas accepting a proposal from the US, but the plan was rejected by Netanyahu.

The plan proposed a week ago included:

70-day ceasefire: The proposal called for a cessation of fighting for 70 days, creating a period of calm to enable further negotiations and implementation of the agreement.

Hostage release: Hamas would release 10 live Israeli hostages, divided into two groups, during this period. In exchange, Israel would release hundreds of Palestinian prisoners, including some serving long sentences, but not Hamas fighters involved in the October 7, 2023 attack.

Partial Israeli withdrawal: The plan involved a gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces from some areas of the Gaza Strip, with a focus on reducing the military presence in populated areas, but maintaining control at border crossings, such as the Philadelphia Corridor near Egypt, for security reasons.

Humanitarian aid: The agreement aimed to facilitate the entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza to address the severe humanitarian crisis, including food supplies, water, and medical equipment.

This proposal was accepted by Hamas, according to Reuters sources, paving the way for a possible end to the conflict, but was rejected by Israel, with Netanyahu's government considering it insufficient to guarantee Israel's security and achieve its military objectives against Hamas. Hamas saw the plan as an opportunity to advance negotiations, but Israel insisted that military pressure remained the main strategy for releasing the hostages and weakening Hamas.
