Year 2025: A year of powerful images, between tragedy, triumph and global transformation
The year 2025 will go down in history as a turbulent one, where major political events, human tragedies, climate challenges, and rare moments of hope collided in a relentless news cycle. The photos of this year spoke louder than words: desperate faces, huddled crowds, flames engulfing cities, and the colors of skies illuminated by the riots of the sun – all became part of the mosaic of 2025.
Since January, Donald Trump returned to the White House, immediately launching a wave of executive orders that have hit immigration, trade, and the international standing of the United States. The images of ICE arresting immigrants in broad daylight, in front of children, constitute some of the most disturbing images of the year, reflecting the deep social divisions in America.
Spring brought another major event: the death of Pope Francis after 12 years as pope. Hundreds of thousands of faithful filled the Vatican squares to bid farewell to a figure who profoundly changed the face of the Catholic Church. With the election of Robert Prevost as Pope Leo XIV – the first American pope – a new era began for the Holy See.
The war in Gaza continued to rage, producing harrowing images – starving children, bombed hospitals, people scrambling for survival amid the rubble. In October, a US-brokered ceasefire offered the first hope of a bloody end to two years of endless pain.
In a year of global crises, the image of a burning California street has become a symbol of climate disaster. Hurricane Melissa devastated the Caribbean, while January's wildfires in Los Angeles wiped out entire neighborhoods. Meanwhile, spectacular solar storms lit up the night sky in the Northern Hemisphere, providing a rare sight in the sky but also a powerful reminder of climate instability.
Amidst all these scenes, the most significant images remained those of the people standing – a woman in a gas mask in Istanbul in the face of police violence, a protester in Berlin lying in front of special forces boots, a migrant family watching a dinghy sail away without them in the English Channel.
