US President Donald Trump said he was "not optimistic" about the fate of jailed pro-democracy activist Jimmy Lai after a conversation with Chinese President Xi Jinping. According to Trump, Lai's case is one of the most difficult issues to resolve in the current US-China relationship.
Returning from a two-day visit to China, Trump said he had raised Lai's case with Xi Jinping, but the response he received was not positive. He said the Chinese leader had described the case as "difficult," suggesting there was little room for a quick resolution. According to Trump, this has made him less optimistic about the billionaire's imminent release.
In an interview with Fox, Trump reiterated that he had discussed Lai's case and that the Chinese response had not been encouraging. He stressed that he had previously mentioned other cases of detainees in China, including a Christian pastor, for whom he had received more positive signals from Beijing, but not for Lai.
Jimmy Lai, a prominent media figure and strong supporter of the pro-democracy movement in Hong Kong, was arrested in 2020 during a broad crackdown on activists following massive anti-government protests. In February, he was sentenced to 20 years in prison under a national security law imposed by Beijing.
His family has repeatedly expressed concern about Lai's health, saying he suffers from diabetes and is being held in harsh isolation conditions. According to their statements, he has lost significant weight and has shown obvious physical deterioration during his time in prison. They have also raised concerns about the extreme temperatures in the cells where he is being held and the lack of basic facilities.
His daughter, Claire Lai, has publicly thanked Trump for his efforts to raise her father's case with Chinese authorities, expressing hope that international intervention could bring about a change. She said his release would be the "fair and honest action" that Beijing could take.
