The House of Representatives has started voting for the election of the Speaker of the House for the next congress.
Lawmakers gathered on Capitol Hill on Friday to swear in the 119th Congress, but must first elect a speaker of the House before moving on to the formal congressional agenda.
Speaker-designate Mike Johnson, R-La., is seeking re-election to the top House post, though the Louisiana Republican must win a majority of the vote to secure another two-year term. Republicans currently hold 219 seats in the chamber, while Democrats hold 215, meaning that if only two Republicans vote against Johnson, he loses on the first ballot.
Several Republican lawmakers, including Reps. Ralph Norman, Tim Burchett and Andy Biggs, have said they remain undecided on whether to vote for Johnson, while Rep. Thomas Massie has said he will vote against Johnson during the vote.
President-elect Trump endorsed Johnson for president, writing in a Social Truth post Friday that the congressman is a "great man of great ability who will have 100% support."
Johnson released a list of commitments for the 119th Congress, if re-elected speaker.
"Republicans have a real opportunity in the next two years to make meaningful spending reforms to eliminate trillions in waste, fraud and abuse," Johnson wrote in a post on X.
"Along with President Trump's America advancing, I will lead House Republicans to reduce the size and scope of the federal government and move the United States on a more sustainable fiscal trajectory."
Johnson's pledges center around an effort to "restore fiscal responsibility" by creating a task force "made up of independent experts — uncorrupted by lobbyists and special interests — to work with DOGE," the Department of Government Efficiency's Trump's newly formed company will soon be led by Vivek Ramasamy and Elon Musk.
Johnson then said he would charge the group with "reviewing existing audits of federal agencies and entities created by Congress — and issuing a report to my office for publication."
Third, Johnson promised to demand that "House committees undertake aggressive authorization and appropriations reviews, including providing additional resources where needed, to expose irresponsible or illegal practices and hold accountable agencies/individuals who have arm the government against the American people."
