Four Israeli soldiers were killed in southern Lebanon by an explosive device, prompting an immediate response from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who ordered the military to intensify strikes against Hezbollah.
In a public statement, Netanyahu called the attack a blatant violation of the ceasefire and warned that the Lebanese militant group would face severe consequences.
"Following Hezbollah's criminal attack, which constitutes a clear violation of the ceasefire, last night I gave instructions to the Israel Defense Forces to strike Hezbollah with force," he declared.
The Israeli prime minister stressed that Israel will not allow attacks on its military forces or the country's territory.
"My directive is clear: Israel will not tolerate attacks on our soldiers or on our territory and will demand a very high price from Hezbollah for such attacks," Netanyahu added.
The four soldiers killed are the first Israeli casualties since the ceasefire agreement between the US and Iran was reached. Following the attack, the Israeli military launched an intensive bombardment of southern Lebanon, where at least 21 people were reportedly killed.
Netanyahu also stressed that the Israeli military will continue its presence in southern Lebanon.
"The troops will remain in the security zone in southern Lebanon for as long as necessary to protect the communities of northern Israel," he declared.
