Charlie Kirk murder, protests "occupy" London; over 1,600 police

Around 1,600 police officers have been deployed to monitor the situation and maintain public order.

The situation in London has become tense, as large crowds of people have taken to the streets to participate in two opposing protests, a demonstration organized by far-right activist Tommy Robinson "in the name of freedom of expression", and a counter-demonstration by anti-fascist organizations.

Around 1,600 police officers have been deployed to monitor the situation and maintain public order.

Tommy Robinson, whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon (42), is known for his anti-immigrant and anti-Islamic stances. He has had several run-ins with the law, including being jailed in 2018 for contempt of court and in 2024 for making false accusations against a Syrian refugee.

Through a post on the social network X, Robinson wrote: "March for your country, march for freedom, march for your children, march for Charlie Kirk," referring to the murder of American conservative activist Charlie Kirk in Utah — an event that has caused widespread reactions among the right.

The protest, organised by Robinson, was scheduled to start at 10am (local time), followed by a march to Whitehall. Organisers had announced the participation of several well-known figures from the international far-right, including Donald Trump's former adviser Steve Bannon, as well as the French leader of the far-right Occupy party, Eric Zemmour.

"March against fascism"

At the same time, the organization Stand Up to Racism UK organized a counter-demonstration in central London, under the slogan “Refugees Welcome.” Participants held banners promoting equality and opposing right-wing extremism.

The Metropolitan Police have prepared to keep the two protests separate, with physical barriers and different routes for marches to Whitehall. The authorities aim to avoid any direct clashes between the groups and ensure the protests proceed as peacefully as possible.
