US President Donald Trump said today that he was ready to impose new sanctions on Russia, provided that NATO member countries stop buying Russian oil.
"I am ready to impose significant sanctions on Russia when all NATO countries agree and start doing the same and when all NATO countries stop buying oil from Russia," he wrote in a post on Truth Social.
At the same time, Trump suggested that NATO member countries impose sanctions of 50% to 100% on imported Chinese products in order to weaken China's economic influence over Russia.
Furthermore, the US president commented that "as you know, NATO's commitment to winning (the war in Ukraine) is far less than 100% and the purchases of Russian oil by some (countries) are shocking! This weakens your negotiating position (...) against Russia".
Trump reiterated that the war in Ukraine "wouldn't have started if I were president. It's Biden and Zelensky's war," referring to his predecessor in the White House and the Ukrainian president.
"I'm here only to help stop and save thousands of Russian and Ukrainian lives," the Republican stressed, commenting that 7,118 people were killed last week, however, without mentioning where this data came from.
"If NATO does what I say, the war will end quickly and all these lives will be saved. If not, then you are wasting my and the US's time, energy and money," he warned.
