The killing of 37-year-old Alex Jeffrey Pretty in Minneapolis during an ICE operation has sparked strong reactions in the United States. Pretty, a U.S. citizen and an intensive care nurse at the city's veterans hospital, died on Saturday, January 24, when he was shot by an ICE agent. The country has now been rocked by protests and new incidents.

It is worth noting that during the protests following Pratt's death, a protester bit and severed the finger of an ICE agent.

Pretty's parents, Michael and Susan Pretty, denounce what they call the Trump administration's "disgusting lies" and categorically reject the version that their son posed a threat. As they told CNN, video from the scene shows Alex Pretty unarmed, with a cellphone in his right hand and his left raised, as he tries to protect a woman who has fallen to the ground and is being pepper-sprayed by ICE agents.

The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) claims that the agents acted “defensively,” citing “violent resistance” from Pretty. In a post on the X platform, DHS released a photo of a semi-automatic pistol, claiming that it belonged to the victim and that he intended to attack the officers. These claims have been strongly disputed, as the latest videos that have been released do not confirm that the 37-year-old was carrying a gun at the time of the shooting, as he had been disarmed by an agent just seconds earlier. At the same time, however, he is seen making a hand gesture towards his now empty holster.

Meanwhile, Minneapolis has been rocked by massive protests. More than 20,000 people took to the streets demanding justice and chanting the name of the deceased. The Minnesota National Guard was put on alert as the protests intensified, less than three weeks after the death of Renee Goode, also a US citizen, by an ICE agent on January 7.

The state's governor, Tim Walz, called the official version of the federal authorities "nonsense" and "lies," while Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem reiterated that the shooting was "defensive." According to the DHS, Pretty had a criminal record, including domestic violence and misdemeanor offenses, a fact that also caused reactions due to the timing of its publication.

On the political front, Donald Trump accused the mayor of Minneapolis and the governor of Minnesota of "inciting a riot," claiming that federal agents were "forced to defend themselves" without sufficient support from local police. Statements by Vice President JD Vance also sparked backlash, accusing local authorities of refusing to cooperate with ICE.

The issue has now moved to Congress. Senate Democrats, led by Chuck Schumer, have announced they will vote against the Homeland Security funding bill, raising the risk of a partial federal government shutdown after Jan. 30. Republican lawmakers are calling for a public hearing on ICE's role as the political deadlock deepens.
