Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) confirmed on Tuesday the killing of a brigadier general in an airstrike carried out by the United States and Israel.
This is Jamshid Eshaghi, who was sanctioned by the US in 2025 for involvement in an international network that transported oil to China and used the proceeds to finance regional groups supported by Tehran.
IRGC Commander-in-Chief Ahmad Vahidi issued a condolence message, confirming that Eshaghi served as head of budget and financial affairs at the General Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces. The headquarters is considered a key structure that coordinates between the regular army and the IRGC.
According to Vahid, Eshaghi was killed along with several members of his family in a US-Israeli attack, without giving further details on the timing or circumstances of the attack. In a message published by the state news agency IRNA, he praised him for his contribution to “strengthening the country’s defense capabilities.”
In February 2025, the US Treasury Department imposed sanctions on Eshaghi and a network of individuals, entities and vessels, accusing them of facilitating the shipment of millions of barrels of Iranian oil to China, worth hundreds of millions of dollars. According to US authorities, the proceeds from these activities were used to finance militant groups in the region, including Hamas in Gaza, the Houthis in Yemen and Hezbollah in Lebanon.
The US Treasury has also accused the Iranian general staff of using networks of front companies and international intermediaries to hide the origin of the oil. According to this information, Eshaghi was associated with the company Sepehr Energy and collaborated with the IRGC to sell Iranian oil to China.
Eshaghi is the latest senior Iranian official that Tehran has confirmed has been killed in the conflict. Earlier, Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei was killed on the first day of the war on February 28, while this month, Ali Larijani, a key security figure, was also reported to have been killed.
Israel and the United States have said the elimination of senior officials is a serious blow to Iran. However, some analysts believe that the Islamic Republic retains the capacity to cope with losses and recover its structures.
