A moment of tension was marked at the White House during the press conference, after the US president's spokeswoman, Caroline Leavitt, verbally clashed with journalist Niall Stanage regarding the murder of Renee Nicole Good, a 37-year-old who was shot dead by an ICE agent on January 7, 2026.
Stanage called the incident “reckless and baseless,” which prompted Leavitt’s immediate reaction:
“Why do you think it was reckless and baseless?” she asked the reporter. The reporter replied that, in his opinion, the agent had acted without thinking and had killed the woman immediately.
After this response, Leavitt reacted harshly, calling Stanage "a left-wing charlatan" and questioning his professionalism.
" You are not a journalist. You simply present yourself as one in this room and it is clearly evident in the way you ask questions. You and other media outlets with this kind of bias should not be here at all ," Leavitt said.
She added that some media outlets, in her opinion, have a distorted and biased approach, especially towards the actions of federal agencies, undermining trust in institutions and turning journalism into activism.
The incident involving the murder of Renee Good has sparked protests and strong debates in the US over the use of force by federal agents, while the victim's family has demanded a full investigation and justice.
