Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky asked President Trump, during their meeting this week, to give Ukraine Tomahawk missiles, which could give Ukraine the ability to strike targets deep inside Russia.
Zelensky revealed on Wednesday on "The Axios Show" that he asked Trump for an additional weapons system, which could force Russian President Vladimir Putin to enter peace negotiations.
The Ukrainian president may not have mentioned this weapons system in his interview with Axios' Barak Ravid, but he said that if Russia knew that Ukraine had it, the pressure for dialogue would increase significantly.
Later, however, a Ukrainian official and another source familiar with the content of the Trump-Zelensky meeting confirmed that it was a Tomahawk, a long-range, high-precision missile.
Ukraine has raised the issue of Tomahawk missiles in its talks with the US several times over the past year, including a list of weapons systems that Kiev requested several months ago.
The Tomahawks, manufactured by RTX, have a much longer range than the missiles NATO has provided so far. They can reach targets up to 1,600 km away, compared to the ATACMS' range of about 300 km. They are also much faster than the Ukrainian drones and produce more powerful explosions.
