Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky arrived at the White House on Monday dressed in more formal attire than his usual military attire, but he did not wear a full suit and tie.
Earlier, a European official told CNN that Zelensky's choice of attire had been a topic of conversation between U.S. and Ukrainian officials ahead of Monday's White House talks. The official said the Trump administration had suggested that Zelensky not wear his usual military attire.
Zelensky's attire became a point of contention during his disastrous Oval Office meeting with Trump in February. When he welcomed the Ukrainian leader to the White House, Trump sarcastically remarked, "He's dressed very nicely today."
During that meeting, a pro-Trump journalist asked Zelensky: "Why aren't you wearing a suit?"
Zelensky told the reporter what he has been saying since Russia's full invasion in 2022: that he will wear his military uniform until there is peace in Ukraine.
