Zelensky: Russia may intensify attacks in Ukraine

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Saturday that there is a possibility that Russia will increase the level of attacks in the northeast of Ukraine, after the recent victories it has scored near the city of Kharkiv.

Russian military troops have attempted to advance on the battlefield, while Ukrainian military forces have faced a lack of offensive and defensive weapons.

Zelensky has admitted that there are problems with the military staff and their morale, adding that some of the existing brigades are dry.

He told the AFP news agency that his country's air fleet was facing shortages and renewed calls for allied countries to send more fighter jets.

"Today we only have about 25 percent of what we need to protect Ukraine," Zelensky said while commenting on Ukraine's air capabilities.

"In order for Russia not to have air superiority, our fleet needs 120 to 130 modern aircraft."

The United States has recently approved an aid package for Ukraine, worth 61 billion dollars, which also includes military equipment.

Russian forces launched their summer offensive weeks ago and took control of several villages on Ukraine's northeastern front, near Kharkiv - the country's second largest city.

Kharkiv regional governor Oleg Synegubov said on Saturday that nearly 10,000 people had been ordered to leave within a week.

"The situation is being controlled by the defenders of Ukraine", he added.

Meanwhile, the Polish Prime Minister, Donald Tusk, announced that his country will spend 2.3 billion dollars to strengthen the eastern border against "potential enemies".

Poland borders Russia, Belarus and Ukraine.

The war in Ukraine started on February 24, 2022.

Russian President Vladimir Putin calls the war a "special military operation" to demilitarize Ukraine.

The West has responded to Russia, hitting the economy of this country with harsh sanctions.

As a result of the war, thousands of people have died and millions more have been displaced from their homes./REL
