US plans to withdraw more than 5,000 troops from Germany; cancellation of long-range missiles seen as most significant development
The weekend for the President of the United States, Donald Trump, started in the usual way and then took a less favorable turn. He spent Saturday morning at one of his golf clubs. Shortly after noon, the White House announced that the president had left for a visit to his dentist in Florida. About an hour later it was announced that he had completed the checkup. This episode remains insignificant compared to the developments that were taking place at the same time in Europe.
Germany was confronted on Saturday morning with the news that the US intends to reduce its military presence on German territory. The US president had previously warned of such measures, but now it became clear that these statements are being implemented. The initial plan foresees the withdrawal of about 5,000 of the more than 39,000 US soldiers currently stationed in Germany, a figure that changes periodically due to rotations and exercises. The spokesman for the Secretary of Defense, Sean Parnell, announced that the process is expected to be completed within six to 12 months.
However, in the evening, after a short flight from West Palm Beach to Miami, Trump suddenly declared that the reduction would be "significantly greater than 5,000," without providing additional explanation.
According to American media reports, a brigade-level combat unit may be withdrawn from Germany in the coming months. It is the “2nd Cavalry Regiment”, located at the military base in Vilseck, Bavaria. According to the military magazine “Stars and Stripes”, this is the only combat unit of this level in Germany. However, its role is more related to rapid intervention operations in the Middle East than to the direct defense of Europe.
In parallel, the Pentagon has decided to cancel the planned deployment of a battalion with long-range firepower this year. This plan included the deployment of Tomahawk missiles in Germany, with a range that reaches Russian territory. The agreement for this deployment was reached two years ago between the administrations of Joe Biden and Olaf Scholz. Security expert Christian Mölling described this development as the most important, since these missiles constitute a central element of the strategy of deterrence against Russia.

Finally, some American politicians consider the current decision to be unfair to Germany, which has increased defense spending and allowed the use of its territory for American military operations.
