The process of counting votes in Greece is nearing completion and the New Democracy party of Kyriakos Mitsotakis has managed to win the mandate to govern alone, thanks to the last change made in the electoral system.
After counting almost 100 percent of the boxes, the New Democracy party of Kyriakos Mitsotakis managed to get 40.57 percent of the votes. While Alexis Tsipras' SYRIZA disappointed in this round as well, after receiving only 17.83 percent of the votes. On the other hand, the coalition PASOK/KINAL experienced an increase, which emerged as the third force with 11.86 percent of the votes.
Also, 5 other parties have managed to win mandates in the 300-seat parliament of Greece. According to the published results, KKE has received 7.42 percent/ Spartans: 4.74 percent/ Greek Solution: 4.57 percent/ VICTORY: 3.79 percent/ Free Navigation: 3.08 percent
The results of the elections translated into mandates show that New Democracy secured 158 MPs/ SYRIZA 47 MPs/ PASOK 32 MPs/ KKE 20 MPs/ Spartans 13 MPs/ Hellenic Solution 12 MPs/ Victory Party 10 MPs/ Freedom Cruise: 8 MPs.

This was the second round of elections in Greece, since in the first round, on May 21, although he won a convincing victory, but not enough to govern alone, Mitsotakis refused to form a coalition and took the country to elections again.
But how can the party of Kyriakos Mitsotakis govern alone, when it has not managed to get more than 50% of the votes?
The electoral system in Greece provides that if the largest party does not get the majority to form the government in the first round and does not accept the creation of coalitions, it goes to the second elections, which will no longer be carried out with the simple proportional system, but with the system proportional reinforced.
So in case of failure of the first round, the second round works with the bonus system. The party that receives over 25% of the votes, automatically has a bonus of 20 more mandates.
So, the party of Mitsotakis with 40.5% of the votes, has managed to get 138 + 20 bonus mandates given by the new electoral system. Clearly, Mitsotakis gets 158 mandates in the 300-seat Parliament of Greece, which allows him to govern alone and without coalitions.
First reactions to the election result:
Shortly before the final election results were announced, the head of the New Democracy party, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, made a statement to his supporters.
Mitsotakis said that the Greek people gave a strong mandate to the New Democracy, as he added that he will reward the trust given by the citizens with work.
Tsipras also spoke about the need to renew the party with new faces, saying that a great historical cycle has closed for the party he leads.
" It was the most difficult, but also the most beautiful election battle we have ever fought. I want to thank the hundreds of thousands of citizens who honored us with their votes. The election result is definitely negative for us. Party members will be called upon to judge us all and devise the strategy that responds to the difficult circumstances. It goes without saying that in this collective creative process of reconstruction, I will be the first to place myself in the judgment of party members ," he said. / Pamphlet
