President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said Sweden must stop protests by supporters of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) in Stockholm to get the green light for its bid for NATO membership.
According to reports, Erdogan told the NATO head Jens Stoltenberg, who has been a strong voice in favor of Sweden's membership in the Alliance.
According to Erdogan's claims, Turkey has a constructive stance, but changing Sweden's terrorism laws to meet Ankara's demands was "senseless" as PKK supporters stage protests in the country.
We recall that Finland and Sweden, after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, rushed to submit their applications to become part of NATO, but Turkey and Hungary turned out to be obstacles for both countries. Finland, on the one hand, managed to meet the conditions set by them and is a member today, while Sweden has not yet agreed on some requirements and is therefore not yet part of the Alliance.
