Israel is preparing for a large-scale ground operation in southern Lebanon with the aim of weakening and disintegrating Hezbollah forces in the area south of the Litani River, international media, including Axios, report, citing Israeli and American officials.
The plan reportedly calls for Israeli forces to enter southern Lebanon and eliminate Hezbollah's military infrastructure, including missile bases, weapons depots and the Iranian-backed group's logistical networks. If carried out, the operation would be Israel's largest military operation in Lebanon since the 2006 war.
A senior Israeli official told Axios that the goal is to destroy Hezbollah’s military capacity in southern Lebanon and create security conditions for Israeli communities near the border. “We will do what we did in Gaza,” he declared, implying a large-scale and prolonged military operation.
Rocket attacks and escalation of the conflict
The plans for the ground offensive come after a series of major attacks by Hezbollah on Israel. According to Israeli media, the group fired about 200 rockets towards northern Israel, causing alarm in several cities and damaging several buildings.
Reports indicate that the attacks were carried out in coordination with actions by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), in a joint operation that included missiles, drones and attacks on several targets in Israel.
In response, the Israeli military has intensified airstrikes on Hezbollah positions in southern Lebanon and the southern suburbs of Beirut, hitting the group's command centers and military infrastructure.
