Despite secret lobbying, connections with Meloni, and diplomatic acrobatics, the Albanian prime minister remains out of the US's interest...
Prime Minister Edi Rama has given up his self-protagonistism as a global leader to negotiate solutions to crises in the Balkan region, but his efforts at the international level have proven disappointing. His attempts to be part of the tables of European Union leaders and to participate in managing decision-making regarding Ukraine have failed, leaving him out of the focus of global politics.
For EU leaders, Edi Rama has become an "entertainment attraction" during summits and meetings, while he has been completely ignored by the White House. His third term (2021–2025) took place without any official invitation to Washington, and he was not even sent a protocol congratulatory message for his victory on May 11.
Rama's numerous efforts, through financial lobbying and contact with the Trump family, as well as through his typical public acrobatics and flattery, did not bring any results. The instruction of the Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, was clear: the US State Department does not provide support to any Albanian political force or leader. This decision showed that any lobbying and diplomatic acrobatics by Rama is without real influence on President Donald Trump and senior US officials, making clear the official distancing of the US from the Albanian Prime Minister.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni personally intervened to secure an official invitation for Rama to the White House, or a private meeting for political propaganda, but her efforts failed. Even during the Munich Conference in February 2025, Edi Rama could not even approach Vice President JD Vance. Donald Trump's Chief of Staff, Susan Wiles, had ordered the State Department delegation to avoid any contact with the Albanian prime minister, thus sealing the American rejection.
The NATO summit on June 25, 2025 was another clear moment of disregard. Although “sister” Meloni made every effort to secure a handshake and photo with Trump, Edi Rama remained outside this privilege, meeting only with a few other prime ministers.
Faced with these diplomatic defeats, Rama's appearance in the international arena seems reduced to futile efforts and ineffective lobbying, proving that his global influence is more illusion than reality./ Pamphlet
