Edi Rama was extremely excited when the US suspended aid programs around the world, including justice programs.
In one of his live broadcasts on social media at the beginning of the year, the ecstatic prime minister said that "the Americans are no longer in SPAK. They are gone, they have left."
This statement by Edi Rama was not a news item, or a studio commentary by a journalist or analyst, whose objective is to provide a panorama of the events taking place.
That enthusiastic declaration by the prime minister, by the chancellor and serious diplomacy, is taken as a stance, as a message from him addressed to the people that justice is no longer under the American umbrella, since they have left.
Even in the vacuum of the change of power, both the US Embassy and the State Department have people, offices, and archives that record and list the official positions of Albania's leaders on this case. Positions that are then served to their leaders with relevant analysis and commentary, including in-depth opinions and information.
Rama's stance, there is no doubt, has been assessed as a political will to not have the Americans on their backs. After this statement, we saw a real freeze in US-Albania relations. Where there has been no high-level contact.
It has now become clear that Trump's Chief of Staff, Susie Wiles, has rejected lobbying to have a standing meeting between Rama and the US president. While in 2018, this meeting had taken place.
