The euro is closing 2025 at its lowest level ever. This late December, the European currency is being exchanged for an average of only 96.6 lekë.
" Traditionally, on the eve of each year-end, there is an increase in the supply of euros in the market. This is related to the return of emigrants, the increase in remittances and year-end expenses, which significantly increase the circulation of the European currency and exert pressure on the exchange rate ," Romina Radonshqi, an economic expert, told A2 CNN.
Data from the Bank of Albania shows that since the beginning of the year, the euro has lost a full 1.62 points. Meanwhile, compared to a year ago, the European currency has shrunk by 1.54 points. This is also due to the tourists who still continue to come to Albania.
"During this year, we have had a combination of very strong factors: increased remittances and a still high influx of tourists. Both of these elements have injected more euros into the economy, while demand for lek has increased, further weakening the euro ," says Radonshqi.
The euro is rapidly shrinking and facing a new Albanian reality, where the power of the local currency is gaining confidence and independence. Along with it, other currencies in the country, such as the US dollar, the British pound or the Swiss franc, are also shrinking.
