Half a million poor Albanians, pensioners and unemployed live on less than 22.5

More than half a million Albanians live on less than 225,000 lek per month, ranking at the border of being poor. INSTAT data on income and standard of living in Albania show that the percentage of risk in Albania is 20.6%, still far from the average of the European Union.
"The value of calories that an individual needs to live is taken into consideration, an individual must live in a family, the conditions of the apartment are taken into account, living requires a color TV, a washing machine. We are not satisfied with that, according to European indicators, a family must have included a pair of holidays", said sociologist Eris Dhamo.

An Albanian risks being poor if he has a monthly income of less than 225 thousand ALL per month. Based on these data, pensioners and the unemployed are the most affected, who in 2022 were even more at risk of poverty, but this phenomenon was also observed among the employed, where 10.5% of them were classified as such.

"Each of the individuals over the age of 16 can be registered at the employment offices, which shows that there is a large unregistered figure that is not reflected in these figures," added Dhamo.

Broken down by gender, women are the most at risk of being poor. 21.1% were at risk in 2022, a figure which continues to grow from year to year. As for families, those with more than 2 children are the most affected, for which the risk of being poor is slightly higher than the minimum wage in the country.

"Truly we say that there are no differences in salaries in the public sector. When we look at the employment indicators, we see that women work in those sectors that are less paid", the sociologist added.

If we compare with the region and beyond, Albania ranks 6th in Europe as the most vulnerable to poverty. Bulgaria records the highest value of relative poverty with 22.9%, followed by Estonia and Latvia, while the lowest value of poverty is recorded in the Czech Republic at 10.6%. /A2 CNN
