Since 2019, the Bank of Albania started to launch the new series of banknotes. This cycle ended in 2022.
But do you know which of these cuts is more usable by citizens?
Alba Gjoka, responsible for the issuance department at the Bank of Albania, identified the two most useful banknotes in the economy.
"The most requested banknote is 5 thousand Leksh. But in reality what circulates the most is 2000 Leksh. The 5,000 Lek denomination is demanded more in the market, so it does not return to the same amount that comes out of the Bank of Albania, as it is a denomination that tends to be preserved somehow. While the most massive use in daily transactions is 2 thousand lekshi" - said Alba Gjoka.
Meanwhile, last year, the largest denomination of banknotes, 10,000 Leksh, was put on the market. But this bill doesn't seem to come easily.
Even when we withdraw lek from the ATM, in most cases the largest and most frequent deduction is 5 thousand lek. But why do we "see" this banknote so little?
"It is the biggest cut we have. As such, citizens use it as a way of hoarding. So it is used more for saving. But not only that, it's also a bit difficult to have it for daily use, since with 10,000 Lek, you can't go to the neighborhood market. In addition to others, this denomination is even the least in the market in relation to other banknotes" - explained Gjoka in Vizion Plus.
Currently, according to the Bank of Albania, a cut greater than 10 thousand ALL is not necessary for the economy. The next cycle for new series of banknotes may be in 10-15 years.
