Trade with the region is at a "stalemate", Albania realizes only 8% of

Albania realized with the countries of the region, Serbia, Kosovo, and North Macedonia about 8% of the commercial volume in the first 3 months of the year. The poor performance in foreign trade, with the main cause being the devaluation of the euro, was reflected by our country with its neighbors, both in exports and imports.

From January to March, we managed to sell only 14.86 billion ALL of Albanian products from around 20 billion ALL in the beginning of 2023. We recorded a decrease with all countries.

" We have a decrease in exports and imports, this is for everyone, not only for the region, but also for Italy. Agriculture in our country is not competitive, as the subsidy is very weak. It's 31 million euros for the whole year, while you have North Macedonia with 100 million euros, a smaller country than us" , Theodhor Kristuli, from the Agri-Food Trade Union, told A2 CNN.

Even in imports, this indicator has decreased. We imported more from Serbia, with 4.9 billion ALL of goods, North Macedonia (2.75 billion ALL) and less from Kosovo (2.66 billion ALL).

" We have a lot to do with Serbia in terms of agriculture and livestock because they bring a lot to us. This is as a result of the large subsidies they have as a result of agricultural and livestock production. Meanwhile, the subsidy to our production is lukewarm. A cow here is subsidized only 10,000 old lek per year, while it is 400 euros in Kosovo and Macedonia ", says Kristuli.

The panorama with these countries is different, as Kosovo is the main export partner and the country where we have the largest positive balance (+6.74 billion ALL), while on the contrary, we receive more imports from Serbia and have the largest trade deficit (-2.44 billion ALL). With North Macedonia, Albania has a slight deficit (-0.9 billion ALL).

" Let's not be surprised one day when our markets have products in foreign languages ", says Kristuli.

Mainly with the region, our country buys onion and potato, while we sell tomato and watermelon./ A2CNN
