While Vladimir Putin needs a permanent state of war to keep the Russian people under his thumb, Donald Trump needs conflicts with the rest of the world to create a pretext for his abuse of power. All those who oppose America's new authoritarian regime should be careful not to fall into his traps.
As Donald Trump's second administration rapidly dismantles US alliances, its domestic institutions and global trade agreements, historian Irena Grudzińska Gross, a professor at the Institute of Slavic Studies at the Polish Academy of Sciences, interviews former Polish dissident Adam Michnik. He explains how America's democratic opposition should confront the authoritarian regime emerging there.
Is America heading towards authoritarianism?
The regimes of Russian President Vladimir Putin and American President Donald Trump have something in common, and it's not just their rhetoric. For both, foreign policy is a function of domestic policy. Putin needs a permanent state of war to keep the Russian people under his thumb.
Trump must create conflicts with the entire world, to present the use of power as necessary to protect American identity and America's well-being. From the perspective of an ordinary Russian, it is irrelevant whether the ruins of Donetsk belong to Ukraine or Russia.
For him, it is more important that there is a war, because that is how people gather around the flag. First, Putin had to destroy civil society in Russia, which he has been doing almost continuously since the beginning of his rule. Even Trump has managed to subjugate in less than 3 months, the main segments of civil society in the US. Normally it takes 3 years to do such a thing.
Of all the foreign leaders to whom Trump can be compared, why do you single out Putin?
Because we are witnessing a complete “Putinization” of the United States. Trump wants to create a regime similar to Putin. But he must do this within the American system. America is a different society from the Russian one, with different traditions and different institutions.
Therefore, the Trump regime will not be a perfect copy. But the fact that Japan is different from Portugal does not mean that they are not both democracies. Authoritarian regimes always have their own historical and national specificities, but that does not mean that they are not authoritarian. As one of my Russian friends told me, Putin is adapting one authoritarian system to another totalitarian system.
You were part of the Polish opposition that successfully resisted the communist dictatorship...
Në atë kohë, askush nga ne nuk e dinte se diktatura po vdiste. Të gjithë e dinim që po dobësohej, se po lëkundej. Por askush nuk priste që të përfundonte ashtu siç ndodhi. Më vonë, askush nga ne nuk e priste “hakmarrjen e kujtesës” që shohim tani në Rusi, si dhe në Hungari, SHBA, Brazil, Argjentinë e kështu me radhë.
Çfarë doni të thoni me këtë?
Ne po shohim sot një fytyrë tjetër të Amerikës, e cila na kishte humbur nga sytë, edhe pse ajo ishte aty gjatë gjithë kohës. Është fytyra e racizmit, përjashtimit, mizorisë, linçimeve dhe dominimit perandorak brutal. Një impuls që u shfaq plotësisht gjatë debatit të ashpër të Trump dhe zëvendëspresidentit J.D.Vance me presidentin ukrainas Volodymyr Zelensky në Zyrën Ovale.
Pashë një paturpësi, një vrazhdësi nga njerëz që as nuk shtirren se njohin parime, ligje apo norma. E vetmja gjë që ka rëndësi për ta, është se kush është më i pushtetshëm. Nëse nuk bindesh, do të hash një grusht në fytyrë. Hakmarrja e kujtesës, është mënyra se si e përshkruaj një Amerikë që nuk është përshtatur me shekullin XXI.
Kjo Amerikë më e errët e përcakton armikun e saj nga gjinia, orientimi seksual dhe identiteti, statusi i migracionit. Është hakmarrja e asaj pjese të shoqërisë që ndihet e zhgënjyer nga përdorimi i diskriminimit pozitiv për të korrigjuar diskriminimin e dikurshëm.
Çfarë duhet të bëjë opozita?
Demokratët duhet ta bëjnë të qartë se ku po e dëmton Trump Amerikën. Për shembull, amerikanët duhet ta dinë se politika tarifore e Trump nuk është në interesin e tyre, se në fund do të dëmtohen prej saj. “Amerika e Para”, do të thotë një izolim i vetë-imponuar.
Nëse dikush veproni si një tiran, fundi do jetë i keq. Kjo duhet t’u shpjegohet edhe votuesve të Trump. Ata i kanë dhënë mbështetjen një sulmi ndaj institucioneve dhe fuqisë së butë amerikane. Si dikush që ka qenë gjithnjë pro-amerikan, kam menduar se Amerika do të rreshtohej gjithmonë në anën e duhur.
Por tani, Trump e ka zhvendosur atë në anën e gabuar, madje duke kopjuar gjuhën e Putinit. Qëllimi më i menjëhershëm për cilindo që shqetësohet për demokracinë në SHBA, është të sigurojë që republikanët të humbasin shumicën në Kongres dhe Senat në zgjedhjet mesit të mandatit vitin e ardhshëm.
Demokratët duhet të kontaktojnë me të gjitha grupet shoqërore, anëtarët e të cilëve mund të kenë mbështetur Trump, dhe t’u shpjegojnë se si administrata e tij po dëmton interesat e tyre. Por efektet nuk do të ndihen doemos brenda natës, do të duhet kohë.

Opozita pro-demokracisë, duhet të ruajë një hapësirë për të folur për atë që na shqetëson. Administrata autoritare e Trump po mbështet tek kaosi, tek njerëzit që nuk po e kuptojnë botën ku jetojnë. Nevojiten grupe ekspertësh dhe institucione të tjera që të dokumentojnë, diagnostikojnë dhe parashikojnë atë që po ndodh.
And of course, we all need to tell the truth. As Jesus once said, the truth will set us free. As we watch Trump's attempt to change the world, let us remember that no victory is final and no defeat is final. We can emerge victorious from every defeat. We must fight.
And how should Europe respond to this threat?
Europe is waking up, asking itself how it can become stronger and more independent. Of course, this process will be difficult. I don't know if it will work, but we have to try.
