The national security of Albania and in the national security strategy is guaranteed, among others, by the existence of a democratic order, the rule of law and a free country based on the principles of the West.
When the Kuçova military base was built, which today became a NATO base, the city was called "Stalin". Built a year after Stalin's death with the help of Soviet funds, it began its life as part of the Warsaw Pact and today is a NATO base.
The then leader of Albania had a vital need to stay in power as a Stalinist.
The history of the base in a way follows the history of Albania's geostrategic journey, from a Warsaw Pact country to a NATO member country and part of the Western alliance in the region.
Today, Albania has full formal political agreement for the presence of NATO in our country, but the presence of NATO is not simply a military matter.
NATO's presence in Albania is above all a political issue. For NATO to be in a pro-Western country, it does not only need a formal agreement on its presence, it is not concerned about such things, but it is important that the country has a clear Western orientation and is an ally of the West not only in words, but with a guaranteed system of Western values.
The national security of Albania and in the national security strategy is guaranteed, among others, by the existence of a democratic order, the rule of law and a free country based on the principles of the West.
Since 1990, Albania has survived its Western course, but several times the country has taken steps back under the pressure of anti-Western political behavior.
In 1997, Albania was engulfed in revolt and placed under international control, after the country's president, Sali Berisha, led an anti-Western course for two years, manipulated elections, imprisoned the opposition leader, massacred opposing journalists, inciting a popular revolt against his rule.
As he left power, he blamed the West for removing him because they wanted to bring American military bases to Albania. Once he stated that they were looking for a military base in Biza, another time that they wanted a military base in Durrës and then in Sazan.
Of course this was a lie, but Sali Berisha's awareness that he could leave power from Western military bases reflected his anti-Western subconscious.
His whole revolt was only about the fact that he was running away from power with the support of the US and the West as a whole.
I am following the same policy now. Although today, from the top of the window, he expressed his support for the NATO military base in Kuçovo, (without asking anyone), every afternoon he gives a speech against the USA and the West, which has sanctioned him as "non grata" and familiarly as a thief, trying to create an anti-Western Taliban contingent in Albania.
This is the reason that when the West talks about political stability in Albania, it does not mean that stability should suppress democracy, but the country should not be destabilized by the anti-Western policies that bring up leaders of the population like Sali Berisha.
The same applies to the politics of Kosovo. The NATO base in Kuçovo is more security for Kosovo, and good news for the Albanian world, but NATO cannot protect Albania and Kosovo from the anti-Western Albanians.
She is here to protect us from dangers that may come to us from afar.
This is the reason that sometimes in Kosovo, people or supporters of the populist leader get nervous because Albania opposes Kosovo, being on the side of the West. It comes out and I will come out every time there is a politician in Kosovo who opposes the West, since the national security of the Albanians is guaranteed by the West.
We must protect ourselves from the dangers we bring to the West in Albania, isolating the anti-Western leaders of Albania and Kosovo. Otherwise, this NATO base that was inaugurated today in Kuçovo, will look as if it was built back in "Stalin" City.
