It's interesting how they remember Fatos Nano as having vices, while being a normal citizen like everyone else made him a much more popular figure than their office-bound "puritan" who has a habit of eavesdropping on vices...
Fatos Nano's dignified funeral has sparked reactions from a small minority seeking to stand out within the opposition. And it's a good opportunity, when almost all of Albania is united in paying homage and expressing respect, to become interesting by doing the opposite.
In fact, when you think a little deeper, the only category that has reason to hate Fatos Nano is the part that wasted their lives being loyal to Sali Berisha and contributing to his survival in the DP. Given that Nano and Berisha were the duo of the first half of the transition, now that Fatos Nano has physically left this world, they have reason to hate their bad luck, having spent 35 years with Berisha at the helm, without any political perspective, ridiculed by society and bullied like the last remnants of Enver.
The man who makes their life's fate more difficult is the example of Fatos Nano. His loss in 2005 and his permanent departure from politics is the only argument that leaves them speechless in the face of their critics, who tell them why Sali Berisha should die in the DP's armchair and not in his bedroom, where he belongs at the end of his life.
The example of Fatos Nano's life terrorizes them. He reminds them of everything their idol, Sali Berisha, could not do, and all the reasons why they are in opposition and in a minority on the verge of extinction. He reminds them that their helplessness comes from the fact that their idol, Sali Berisha, has left them on the streets, for all the reasons they hate Fatos Nano today.
It is interesting, for example, how they remind Fatos Nano of the fact that he was accused of corruption, while his prison has been certified as political imprisonment, just as Berisha cannot certify the process against him except to his own thugs.
It's interesting how they remember to say that Fatos Nano was not a patriot and did not love Kosovo, while he is the only one who sat both Rugova and the KLA at the same table — and after his death, with complete unanimity, exactly what Berisha cannot do.
It's interesting how they remember Fatos Nano as having vices, while being a normal citizen like everyone else made him a much more popular figure than their office-bound "puritan" who has a habit of eavesdropping on vices.
Today, they do not mourn the vices of Fatos Nano, but rather their own fate, their idol, who – precisely because he is not like Fatos Nano – has left them on the streets, without prospects for power, deforming them as human beings and making them interesting only by throwing stones at a coffin, which in fact has spent its entire life, thanks to their idol, wanting to be the murderer of the one inside it.
