But all these populists and sovereignists have licked their saliva when they found themselves in serious situations such as the Greek economic crisis or Covid 19.
Isabel Santos, the European Parliament's rapporteur for Albania, is not a "typical" politician. That is, it comes from a militancy network of interest groups of the Socialist Party of Portugal, of which it is a part.
Before being elected to the Parliament of her country and the European Parliament, Mrs. Santos was a diplomat. Even in parliamentary and European parliamentary positions, she has always covered issues of foreign relations, as she has specialized in such matters.
Since 2019, when she was elected to the European Parliament and of course part of the Committee on Foreign Relations, Isabel Santos is one of the most authoritative voices on EU foreign relations issues. It has never been unbalanced, or that it has held controversial positions. Because she has a professional profile of a parliamentary diplomat.
However, Mrs. Santos made a strong statement today in Tirana. It can also be called a "bomb" if you consider the declarative protocol of European Union officials.
She has considered the Greek government's maneuver to block Albania as a "unique case that does not even happen in the world". So not only in the EU, but also in the world. But why did this happen?
Of course, not only that the EU is a guarantor power that never hears from its officials populist or distorted positions for electoral reasons. The EU is such a complicated super-institution that it has created both the legend and the controversy that we are dealing with a "cobweb of evil". Paraphrasing the populists and sovereignists who have used and use the anti-EU position as the basis of their policy in the EU member states.
But all these populists and sovereignists have licked their saliva when they found themselves in serious situations such as the Greek economic crisis or Covid 19.
Two of the most emblematic examples are the Greek Syrisa and the 5 Stars in Italy. Who conceived their election campaign against Brussels and the EU. But Greece, financially bankrupt from the 2008 crisis, was saved only by direct financial aid from Brussels. Whereas the Italy of 2020, where the economy was dying from the pandemic lockdown, was revived only by the 200 billion that Ursula von der Leyen gave to Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte. who has only a political pride of his own as a politician. That gave the Italian economy a giant syringe filled with 200 billion euros. That revived the economy and business in the country.
This EU today is a political power more than before and the war in Ukraine is showing it, but in the case of Albania it is specific.
The EU is the administrator and leader of the ONM (International Monitoring Operation) of Albanian justice. A group of the best prosecutors and judges in the world, who today are financed, directed and guided by the EU dome, namely the EU Enlargement Directorate.
Which is the Constitutional body of the Republic of Albania. A sensational, unprecedented development, which Albania accepted with 140 votes in Parliament. Despite the fact that Berisha and Meta withdrew from the essence of ONM's mission, which is vetting, ONM, that is, the EU, is really an institution of the Republic of Albania.
This is the real key to this whole development, why the EU or the big European countries have not accepted the Greek rhetoric. Because in reality, even in the Constitution, even though Albania is not in the EU de jure, the EU is de jure within the Republic of Albania.
And this is a choice of two parties since 2016. Today we even have a record of this experience, which of course requires an open, professional and logical debate, but not an attack. Therefore, Isabel Santos invited the opposition and its media supporters not to attack the new justice, but not to criticize and judge its activity.
That act of 2016 that introduced the EU as part of the Constitution of the Republic of Albania, even today has not been fully perceived, but it is really one of the most important developments in Albania. If not the most important. That's why Edi Rama also flirts with the European Union, as he knows very well that if he is not an equal actor in Brussels, the latter is a constitutional actor of Albania...
