As the final ballot boxes are being counted, the Democratic Party's unexpected loss in the May 11 elections is taking final shape. The DP, under the leadership of Sali Berisha, has seen a 12.5% drop in votes compared to the results in the 2021 elections. In the May 11 elections, the DP, together with its allies, received about 170,000 fewer votes than (the DP without LSI) in the April 25, 2021 elections.
The defeat of the DP takes on another dimension if we consider another electoral indicator. In these elections, the DP competed merged with the Freedom Party, the former LSI. In 2021, LSI received 107 thousand votes. The DP and the former LSI received about 730 thousand votes in 2021. In these elections, the Freedom Party was divided and with its leader in prison. Perhaps the PL's votes have been reduced by half in these elections.
However, the DP and PL, in the May 11 elections, failed to obtain 500 thousand votes. The opposition coalition has lost at least 250 thousand votes compared to the result in 2021. In all 12 districts, the DP, merged with the PL, has fallen from 9 to 20% compared to the 2021 elections, when it competed without the LSI.
The DP suffered the biggest setback in the regions of Fier, Dibra and Gjirokastra, where the campaign was led by Gazment Bardhi, Tritan Shehu and Xhelal Mziu. The burden of the loss at the national level falls on Sali Berisha, but also on the Secretary General of the DP, Flamur Noka, who curses and threatens every citizen who does not think like him.
The opposition claims that the 'narco-regime' stole the elections. It is an alibi that has been repeated since 2015. But, there is a fact that refutes this claim; The opposition has won in Lazarat, Kavaja, Mirditë, Kukës, Shkodra, Kruja, Puka, Has, Kamëz, etc. Secondly, if we combine the votes of the DP with its three derivatives, the divergence with the SP is narrow.
