Veliaj's last chance to put up a real fight

So clearly the driving force behind the launch of Veliaj's dismissal procedure is only one person: Edi Rama!

Erion Veliaj has since yesterday been transformed from Rama's main partner in the SP, into an appendage that Rama could hardly wait to remove from his political body. The SP that now completely dominates from the Prime Minister's Office to the Assembly and even the Tirana Municipality. We say SP because all three of these institutions are no longer legitimate but simply personal extensions of Rama under the party's logo. And Veliaj is just the latest victim of the 27-year war of the politician who now dominates the entire public space with the exception of the judiciary. A king without a crown and scepter but with all the power of power that an absolute monarch would envy. And Veliaj, from his darling until yesterday, has now been transformed into his latest victim. The irony of fate is that the man who, through Mjaft in 2005, played a major role in paving Rama's path to the top of power had two obstacles. Nanon in the SP, which without Veliaj would hardly be able to defeat Berisha, who defeats himself whenever he can.

Now, like any politician with a clear autocratic tendency, Rama does not stop at any obstacle in the accumulation of personal power. Not even in front of his friends and associates. Not against his opponents, because there are none. Not because he has friends and associates, because he now only stands above the submissive. But this argument of course does not absolve Veliaj from the legal responsibilities that he certainly has. Nor does it mean that Rama is the "Sun" of Nesti Angoni or Aran Çela of the case. And even less is the argument for Veliaj's dismissal a fabrication of Rama to hit Veliaj, since his 3-month absence from office leads the Tirana Municipal Council to the only solution to the created impasse, namely his dismissal. But be careful! The devil always hides behind the details! And the devil in this case is the office where the meeting in which the decision was made was held. The headquarters of the Socialist Party. Exactly the last place in which this decision should have been made.

But to return to the subject of discussion, Rama made a third mistake with Veliaj. The first mistake was when he went out into the street accompanied by an order from the entire municipal administration in an anti-rally against SPAK. Not because he considered the Veliaj case unfair, but because in Veliaj at SPAK he saw himself in the mirror. The statement to SPAK that “you have no business with my phone” exposed Rama not as empathetic to the newly arrested mayor, but as a subsequent victim of possible corruption investigations.

And the Incinerators issue is surely keeping half of socialist Tirana awake. Imagine the big boss! The Incinerators are the place where most of the left-wing government officials meet, who have more or less dipped their fingers in it, as public facts show. The second mistake was not dismissing Veliaj from the Tirana Municipal Council after the continuous demands of the opposition councilors. The argument was the same one used by Rama today at the SP headquarters, while the various petitioners. Then why didn't he act immediately after the 3-month deadline for Veliaj's failure to appear in office was exceeded, but precisely in September of the beginning of the fourth governing mandate? Because Rama is the one who protects you and Rama is the one who lets you go. And the third and most serious mistake is imposing the decision to dismiss under his dictate, on a directly elected body such as the group of municipal councilors of the Socialist Party, regardless of the acronyms they represent. After all, they are elected. At least formally.

So clearly the pivot of the initiation of the procedure for the dismissal of Veliaj is only one person: Edi Rama! And Veliaj already has it clear and without any dilemma, just like anyone who uses a smartphone and a television. So what is left for him to do except follow the path that leads to legal clashes? He also has the path of political battle. Which would be the first real battle if we get serious about those with Këlliçi, Halim Kosovë and Basha's Molotov cocktails, let's not call them real battles because of the suicides of the DP every time he competed against Veliaj. It is enough to look at the history of the difference in votes in 2015, 2019 and 2023 to understand that the mayoral races were rigged by the democratic rivals themselves. So the time has come for Veliaj to step onto the battlefield, which this time is not only political, but mainly existential for him and his biological family, who are shouldering the brunt of the rampant corruption of the socialist majority.

This is unfair, even though Veliaj has his own responsibilities in relation to the law. But as custom demands, everyone must bear their own responsibilities. And something on Tik-Tok Veliaj said! “When I speak, you will be the last”! Of course he did not have it for Zegjinena! So the time has come for Rama's betrayed companion to fight a real battle. The fiercest one, the battle within the species! One thing is certain. Erion Veliaj is doomed to do it because he has nothing to lose. And Rama on the other hand should perhaps remember that the popular expression “The drowned one drowns” should not be taken simply as folklore but as an (un)calculated risk.

Yesterday, with the defense lawyers' stance, it seems that the first step was taken through an appeal to the Constitutional Court. The other steps can only be legal if Veliaj is going to fight for himself. And it seems that he will fight the only battle he has left if the word dignity still has value for him!
