Every wise European mind I have read specifies that the only European who has received a personal invitation is Blair.
History is a harsh but kind teacher. It teaches us that foreign policy is like the song of Nasruddin that the flute plays today, but the music is heard tomorrow.
Every movement, participation, reaction is well measured. Even a good politician is one who sees what is not visible today.
There are two events that are happening at the same time and that are being carefully measured by European NATO member countries.
The first is the Peace Board, which was not designed specifically for Gaza, but as a permanent body that clearly positions itself as an alternative to existing UN institutions.
Second, the Greenland issue. Trump apparently wants no alliance with Greenland. If he doesn't buy it, he has decided to invade a sovereign country, an action opposed by a large majority of Americans (75 percent according to CNN, 86 percent for Quinnipiac).
The road to hell is always paved with good intentions.
So initially it was said that this was about national security, because the Arctic, thanks to the warming of the North Pole, is becoming a much more controversial part of the globe, with more valuable sea lanes and military activity. Russia and China have their eyes on this. And so should America.
But Greenland is already in NATO, and the Danes and Greenlanders would be more than happy to have all the American bases that were once there activated, even more so if necessary. After all, the Danes are among the best members of the alliance. They were involved in the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, for many years, with many casualties. Even when Germany and France refused to send troops to accompany the US and the UK in Iraq, the Danish parliament voted to support the US. So the Danes have literally given their lives for the Americans.
This week, Trump tried to suggest that if the US doesn’t invade Greenland against the will of its people, Russia and China will. That too seems like an absurd argument. If Russia or China threatened Greenland’s sovereignty, NATO would invoke Article 5. That’s why Russia and China haven’t.
So what's left to defend its conquest? Some say Trump wants to expand his domain footprint. Trump wants an America that looks bigger so he can gain glory.
But even this reason is not convincing. While with the Peace Council it seeks to end the UN, with the invasion of Greenland it is seeking to effectively end NATO. Every second that a NATO ally is threatened in this way deeply damages the alliance and endangers the order of the entire world.
While NATO countries are making it clear by increasing troops in Greenland that a war in Greenland is a war against NATO and Article 5 will be activated, Trump is announcing the increase in tariffs for reasons completely unrelated to trade or any possible economic emergency.
This situation requires that European NATO member countries not rush to announce their participation in the Peace Board, but take time to assess the goals, status, conditions, and demands that this organization will impose, as well as to clarify Trump's stance towards NATO.
Every wise European mind I have read specifies that the only European who has received a personal invitation is Blair.
Since more than 60 countries, through their leaders, have not been invited to an event for special personal merits where awards or decorations will be awarded, but to an organization that could destabilize the current peace order, it is a participation that must be weighed, evaluated, because due to the convenience of the small interests of the moment, they may be on the wrong side of history!
