Besim Sherifi is suspected of hiding in Tirana for 10 years. He was using the identity of a Kosovar, documents that were seized from him after his arrest and are suspected to be forged.

Initially, two months ago, the Operational Forces had received information through operational channels that a person wanted for murder was hiding in an apartment in the Dry Lake area.

After identifying him, the Albanian side requested information from the authorities in North Macedonia and concluded that 52-year-old Besim Sherifi was declared an international wanted man. After the Operational Unit intervened in the apartment he was renting, the 52-year-old told them I am not the person you are looking for. “I have not committed any murder, I am a Kosovar Albanian.”

But according to sources, fingerprints revealed that the person in question was Besim Sherifi. The murder for which he is accused took place in 2007 in the village of Kopanica, in Skopje, where 3 people were killed.

The court had ordered him to be arrested in absentia, which according to criminal legislation in North Macedonia provides for a life sentence.

"State Police/The 80th phase of the police operation codenamed "Operacionalja" is finalized. Wanted for three murders in North Macedonia, the 52-year-old is located and captured in Tirana. The 52-year-old had been hiding in Tirana for a long time, using forged identification documents, in the name of a citizen from Kosovo.

His location, after several months of investigations and searches by the Directorate of the Special Operational Force in the Criminal Police Department of the State Police.

The 52-year-old is under the security measure "Arrest in prison" for murder (the maximum sentence for this offense in the Criminal Code of the Republic of Macedonia is life imprisonment).

Following successive operations by the Special Operations Force Directorate, based on information obtained during a long period of investigation and tracking, to locate and capture a wanted man for a triple murder in North Macedonia, the 80th phase of the police operation codenamed "Operacionalja" has been developed and finalized.

As part of this phase, operational services located, captured and escorted the citizen suspected of three murders in the Dry Lake area.

The in-depth verification revealed that the escorted citizen, who was using forged identification documents and a driving license in the name of a citizen from Kosovo, was a person wanted by North Macedonia, accused of triple murder.

Following the actions, the provisional arrest, with the aim of extradition, of citizen Besim Sherifi, 52 years old, resident of Kopanica, Saraj, North Macedonia, was carried out.

The arrest of this citizen was carried out after Interpol Skopje declared him internationally wanted, because the Skopje Court, in 2007, assigned him the security measure "Arrest in prison", for the criminal offense "Murder", an offense for which the criminal legislation of North Macedonia provides for the maximum penalty, life imprisonment.

This citizen is suspected of having shot and killed 3 citizens on 05.10.2007, in the village of Kopanica, Skopje, North Macedonia.

During the physical search and at the residence, 1 Kosovar passport, Kosovar identity card and driving license, all forged, with the details of a citizen from Kosovo, were found and seized from this citizen.

"The procedural materials for the criminal offense of "Forgery of documents" have been referred to the Prosecutor's Office at the First Instance Court of General Jurisdiction in Tirana, for further action. Meanwhile, Interpol Tirana, in cooperation with Interpol Skopje, will continue the procedures for the extradition of this citizen to North Macedonia," the police announced.
