Brothers Klement and Eldi Çala have appealed to the Constitutional Court regarding the sensational robbery at Rinas airport, challenging the recent decision of the Supreme Court. The request was officially filed on Monday by their legal representatives.
Through lawyers Evjola Shehu and Neshat Fana, they are requesting the annulment of the current decision and the return of the file for retrial. The request to the Constitutional Court alleges that the principles of due process and the constitutional rights guaranteed to the defendants were violated during the trial.
The case is related to the spectacular robbery at Rinas Airport, one of the criminal events that has caused the most debate and public attention in Albania in recent years.
The robbery at Rinas airport took place on April 9, 2019 and is considered one of the most spectacular criminal events in Albania. The perpetrators managed to enter the runway of the "Mother Teresa" airport and steal millions of euros that were being transported by plane to Austria.
The Supreme Court upheld the 122-year prison sentence from the Appeals Court of Kosovo for the 7 involved, in November 2025.
Klement Çala was sentenced to 20 years in prison. Oltion Veseli, Renaldo Sulaj, Saimir Çela, Oltion Pikli and Alkon Bengasi and Eldi Çala were sentenced to 17 years in prison each. The trial for Talo Çela continued separately, because he is on the run. While for Admir Murat, considered the "head" of this group, the investigations were discontinued because he passed away.
How did the robbery in Rinas happen?
An armed and masked group entered the airport runway in a van bearing the inscription “Tax Investigation”. The perpetrators broke through the security perimeter and moved towards the Austrian Airlines plane, which was about to depart for Vienna. As the money was being loaded onto the plane, the robbers attacked the armored vehicle transporting monetary values. They took several bags of money, allegedly containing around 4.6 million euros.
What happened during the escape?
After the robbery, the perpetrators attempted to flee towards the Fushë-Krujë area. During the police pursuit, there was an exchange of fire. In this clash, Admir Murataj, considered the main organizer of the robbery, was killed. His body was found next to a burned car near Nikla. It is suspected that the robbers burned the vehicles to cover their tracks.
After lengthy investigations, SPAK and the police arrested several people suspected of being part of the criminal group. Among them were brothers Klement and Eldi Çala, who are accused of involvement in organizing and carrying out the robbery.
The case was accompanied by much public debate, due to the high level of organization of the group and the fact that the perpetrators managed to enter a high-security area such as Rinas airport.
