New developments have come to light regarding the death of 19-year-old Albanian Myrto on the island of Kefalonia, while one of the arrested, a 26-year-old former weightlifter, has appeared in court where he apologized for the incident.
According to information, he claims to have been the person who took the unconscious girl out of the apartment and that, together with a 23-year-old man, they notified the emergency services. However, the Greek Police investigations present a more serious version of the event.
Initially, the three arrested were charged with exposure and violation of narcotics laws, but the charge was later upgraded to intentional homicide by omission, under the provisions of the Greek Criminal Code. This change gives the case greater legal weight, while the other two suspects are expected to give their testimonies.
The incident took place in Argostoli, where the 19-year-old was found unconscious in a central square in the early hours of Tuesday morning. She was rushed to the island's hospital, where she later died.
According to the indictment, the three young men, aged 26, 23 and 22, were allegedly with the victim in a hotel room and did not offer her assistance when she lost consciousness, then leaving her where she was found.
Security camera footage is considered key evidence in the investigation, as it shows the 26-year-old dragging the unconscious girl out of the hotel and leaving her outside. Meanwhile, investigators suspect that those involved may have attempted to cover up their tracks, including cleaning the room and removing the victim's phone, which was later found abandoned.
According to initial forensic examinations, the cause of death is related to cardiac arrest following pulmonary edema, while toxicological analyses are expected to provide more information on the circumstances.
At the same time, family and friends said their final goodbyes to the 19-year-old in the city's cathedral, amid an atmosphere heavy with grief. Her father, in a powerful emotional statement, raised suspicions of the involvement of an organized criminal network and demanded justice for his daughter.
"It is an organized group, which may have had a leader, may have had a deputy leader, may have had assistants, may have had actors, I don't know what there may have been. Spare me, don't let them insult my child. Today I have both my daughter's wedding and funeral. I dressed her as a bride and went and spoke to her and said 'my child, here I am. I had promised to accompany you. Instead of taking you to your lover, I am taking you to Haros. You destroyed me, my daughter!'" said the Albanian's father.
Investigations continue, as authorities are analyzing every piece of evidence to fully elucidate the circumstances of this serious event.
