The current photo of the much-wanted Gerd Gjinarari , who was arrested in Belgium after several years on the run, has been published. The images have been made public by the State Police, which confirmed his capture as part of international cooperation between law enforcement authorities.
Gjinarari, known by the nickname "The General", was declared an international wanted man after he failed to appear to serve his life sentence, following a decision by the Court of Appeals that ordered his return to prison.
He was initially convicted by Italian justice in 1997 for the murder of Naim Zyberi, a well-known figure in the criminal world in Tirana. According to investigations at the time, the crime took place in a hospital in Milan, where Zyberi was receiving medical treatment.
The investigation file revealed that Gjinarari and Arben Grori had entered the patient's room posing as his relatives. The perpetrators are suspected of having hidden the weapon inside a bouquet of flowers, which they used to carry out the execution.
In 2014, Gjinarari was extradited to Albania, while the Tirana Court recognized and upheld the life imprisonment sentence given by the Italian authorities.
However, in 2019 he was granted conditional release by a decision of the Korça Court, a decision that caused debate and strong public reactions. Later, the Court of Appeal overturned this decision and ordered his return to prison. After this moment, Gjinarari disappeared and was declared an international wanted person.
Following his arrest in Belgium, extradition proceedings are expected to begin to Albania, where he will face the execution of the remaining sentence.
