The Constitutional Court has reopened the trial of Arben Frroku, accused of the murder of Commissioner Dritan Lamaj. The hearing for Frroku will be held on February 17, at 10:00.
This move comes after the European Court of Human Rights decided to reopen the case of Arben Frroku, who was sentenced to life in prison for the murder of Lamaj in 2013.
Strasbourg assessed that the process against him had violated human rights and should be retried by the Constitutional Court of Albania.
Arben Frroku is sentenced to life by the Serious Crimes Appeal for the murder of Commissioner Lamaj, but he is in prison in the Netherlands, a country that has refused his extradition.
Frroku appealed to the Strasbourg Court after his appeal was rejected by the High Court on June 8, 2017, as well as by the Constitutional Court on April 24, 2018, leaving the life sentence in effect.
How was Commissioner Dritan Lamaj killed?
On the evening of February 24, 2013, the police officer was executed by automatic fire while parking his vehicle near his apartment in Selitë. The police requested the arrest in Greece of businessman Arben Frroku, as a suspect in the crime, classified due to the duty of officer Lamaj.
Frroku did not accept the prosecution's accusation, stating that he had conflicts with the victim Dritan Lamaj, but for all of this he had filed criminal reports with the Tirana prosecutor's office.
According to the file, only one Kalashnikov automatic weapon was used in the murder of Dritan Lamaj, while around 20 shell casings were found at the scene. Dritan Lamaj's body had 12 bullet wounds.
