Genti Krasniqi, one of Interpol's most wanted names for international drug trafficking, has been captured in the Colombian city of Tunja, after nearly a decade on the run.
Genti Krasniqi, the Albanian considered a drug lord in Colombia, has been arrested by authorities after 9 years on the run.
Local media outlet El Tiempo reports that the 62-year-old entered Colombia in 2023 and stayed in Bogota and other suburban cities.
In 2016, the Milan Prosecutor's Office discovered that a luxury apartment was being used by a couple, a young Italian woman and an Albanian man, to hide heroin shipments coming from Tirana.
Although both were caught, the man managed to flee Italy on the run. He has since been wanted by Interpol, which notified its counterparts in Colombia in January of last year.
It is reported that in Albania, there are no charges against him.
Although there was information that the Albanian had moved to South America, it was a surprise in Milan that he had been found 8,900 kilometers away, in the cold city of Tunja.
Colombian Immigration officials immediately identified him and launched an operation to capture him.
In Boyacá, he presented himself as a foreign tourist, but El Tiempo found his name in court records that identified him as a member of a drug trafficking network that used prostitutes to transport them around Europe.
Not much is known about his partner, Irma Veruari, but it is confirmed that the detainee is Genti Krasniqi, 62 years old.
"His trip to Tunja happened because his passport had just expired and he believed that in a small town he would not receive an Interpol red notice," a judicial source told the media.
His activities in Colombia are being investigated, which are suspected to be related to drug trafficking. In fact, there is also an investigation into who protected him in Colombia and how he managed to enter the country.
Genti Krasniqi is being held in custody, awaiting an extradition request from Milan.
